Clocks, Watches/Verichron Quartz Chime Model Regulator
Expert: Martin Meyer - 10/29/2009
QuestionQUESTION: We just received the above named clock (model # 192304 84). We were assured it ran fine, but have been unable to get it to keep correct time. It runs, but was 3 hours slow within a 6 hour period. It has a new D-cell battery and the pendulum seems to swing OK. But, with no instructions with the clock, we do not know if there is an adjustment to make on the pendulum or other things we need to do to make it run properly. Please advise us and if instructions are available for this clock for future reference.
ANSWER: Hi Janice,
Three hours loss in six hours indicates a serious problem, and there is no adjustment that would help. Additionally, quartz clocks do not have regulating systems at all. You should check the battery contacts in the movement; if they are corroded or dirty, clean them with a pencil eraser until they are shiny. Use ONLY an alkaline battery, not a rechargeable or old-fashioned carbon-zinc battery. Make sure that it is installed in the right direction. Observe closely if the hands are hitting each other, the dial, or the front glass (if it has one). If so, they must be corrected so that they do not touch anything at all except their center shafts. The pendulum swing is unrelated to the timekeeping on quartz clocks. You will probably not be able to find an instruction manual. "Verichron" is a brand name used by numerous companies, and does not tell you who made the clock. If none of the above corrects the problem, you will have to replace the entire movement. This is not usually too difficult, and movements are available from any clock supply house.

QUESTION: We do know who made the clock if that would make a difference in obtaining an instruction manual. However, after sending in my question yesterday, the clock has stopped running entirely. It was manufactured by Harris & Mallow Products, Div of Thomas Industries, Inc. Thank you so much for your speedy response to the first question.
AnswerHi again Janice,
I just had a very similar question about Harris & Mallow, and can give you that information.
Instruction manuals can be very difficult to obtain. Many "companies" are really just trademarks or brand names, not manufacturers. Also, clock companies are frequently bought and sold by other companies, just as are companies in general these days. So tracking down the actual manufacturer can be difficult or impossible.
Thomas Industries is a very large company, marketing many products other than clocks. They sold their Harris & Mallow division some time ago. The most current address for Harris & Mallow that I can find is 651 NEW HAMPSHIRE AVE, Lakewood, NJ 08701. I could not find a website for them.
It sounds like the movement in your clock is done for. A replacement will possibly come with operating instructions.
