Question
I inherited a Grandmothers clock that had been made by the Million-Rutherford company in Fallston, Maryland  I recently hauled in across country in the back of my minivan.  I made sure it was stabilized and all the gongs and chimes were wrapped in bubble wrap before it was moved.  When trying to put it back together the the mechanism holding the pendulum fell apart.  we have put it back together but the pendulum will not swing.  We have checked to make sure it is perfectly level and as far as we know everything is in it's place.  Any ideas as to what we can do?  The clock came with very little information about how things should look.  We have followed those diagrams to a T.  Getting frustrated, would really like to hear the clock chime again.  I know my grandmother moved the clock all the time, and it was working the day I went to pick it up.  Any help you can offer will be much appreciated.  Thank You, Karen

Answer

Suspension Setup
Hi Karen,

There are a number of things that could be causing the problem. First, check that the pendulum assembly is connected correctly. I have attached a photo to illustrate this. Check that the suspension spring is not broken, it can sometimes be difficult to see. Also check that the crutch is connected to the pendulum leader correctly. On some clocks it is like in the picture, on others the leader does not have a hole in it, and the crutch has a fork with slot. The leader goes in the slot in the crutch.

The most common reason for a clock's not running after moving is that the pendulum is out of beat. Setting the beat can be a little complicated or difficult. Please browse my previous answers where I cover the topic in detail. If you have trouble finding the information you need, send me a followup and I'll try to help.

If none of these efforts seem to help, you may want to consider having a professional clock repairer do a service call. He can lubricate the movement, which is very important, set the beat, and correct other problems.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
