Clocks, Watches/G'father clock won't chime

Question
Mr. Perkins: I came into possession of a Trend g'father clock that won't chime.  The chime prevention bars are not in the way and it's set to the "chime" position.  It keeps time just fine.  Neither the Westmister :15, :30, :45 & 1:00 sounds nor the hourly, e.g., 11 dongs for 11 o'clock hour will chime. I manually moved the right and left weights so that they're half-way down the train - but no luck. The clock sat idle for over a year. Any thoughts?  Thanks.  - Joe

Answer
The key to this problem is in your statement, "The clock sat idle for over a year."  During the period of long inactivity the lubricants in the clock have combined with atmospheric dirt to form an emulsion creating more friction than the clock is capable of overcoming without some help.  The best solution would be to have the clock professionally serviced.  As an alternative you might consider introducing fresh lubricant into the clocks movement.  There are a number of kits specifically designed for the homeowners use. You need only to search the Internet for "clock lubrication kit'.  During my years of doing business I provided my customers with a complimentary kit.  The kit provides lubricant and instruction.  It is available at the following address, <howtorepairclocks.com/clock-oil.html>  Even if such a kit would not solve the current problem it would serve you well as a part of your normal maintenance program.  Regards WJP
