Question
have illinois gold pocket watch with engraved case. Inside markings are Dueber warranted 20 years 6920860 / Illinois watch co Springfield 15 jewels  1983836  and SF.  also some other numbers on rim of inside back 2   0860.  Any idea what all these numbers mean?  It is missing the crystal also...haven't checked it to see if it keeps time.  Can a replacement crystal be purchased?

Answer
Robin,

Yes, a replacement crystal can be purchased from a watch supply warehouse.

Dueber Company made the case and it is gold filled.  The gold was warranted not to wear
through to the base metal for 20 years.

1983836 is the serial number that dates the watch to 1907.

The SF are on the regulator that allows one to adjust the speed of the timekeeping Slower and Faster.

The numbers on the case are only useful to the company and the numbers on the rim, if they are hand etched, are from a previous watchmaker.  It was common for them to put marks on the case.
there were not standard codes so each watchmaker used his own.

Kind regards,

Melvin
