Clocks, Watches/Lorenz Furtwängler & Sons mantle clock

QuestionHi William,
We have an oak mantle clock which was has been through at least three generations and is at least 90yrs old. On googling the clock I have discovered it is an LFS clock - it has the LFS logo within a cog on the back of the clock mechanism. It chimes quarterly and has two tones. Until today we thought it was not working but on visiting my mother who has the clock - I tried moving the time and pendulum and low and behold it is working and chiming fine.
We have two questions which we would be very grateful if you could help us with:
1. We are interested to knowing how old it is - it has two numbers on the back of the mechanism: 5130 behind the pendulum and 14 to the right
2. The minute hand has been broken and is missing - is it possible to get a replacement or should we enquire about having a replica made (the hour has a fleur-de-lie shape)
Let us know if you can help or point us in the direction of somebody whom can help - incidentally we are based in London, UK.
Thanks!
AnswerYour being in London poses a bit of a problem for me, particularly with respect to parts for you clock. In that respect the best I can do is to refer you to a clock materials house located on the Eastern seaboard of the USA. It is for Merritt's Antiques located in Douglassville, Pa. To view their on line catalog goto <www.merritts.com> The catalog will provide you with a good selection of replacement hands. I suggest you contact them either be telephone or e-mail and discus your needs with one of their customer representatives for their guidance in selecting the proper set of hands. As to the probable age of your clock, I cannot assist you. I no longer posses production dates for this maker. For this I suggest you contact the British Horological Society. Sorry to be of so little help. Regards, WJP.
