Question

A403-001
I have been given an older Seth Thomas with a Hermle A403-001 2 Jewel balance spring movement.  I don't know a lot about clocks but, have a little bit of experience.  It would not run when I receive it, run's about 5 secs. it's been carefully cleaned and is still not running. I cannot find the jewels and suspect they've been removed??  Are they suppose hidden or behind a metal tab that can be moved?

Answer
the two jewels are in either end of the small hollow tube that forms the axel for the balance wheel and runs inside the spiral spring - the wire runs through the tube and the jewels with the hole in each for the wire are in each end of the tube.

did you oil it? did you wind it? Does the gear that drives the Y shaped yoke move when the balance is rotated? in your photo - on the front plate, center and about 1.5" down from the top, there is a sloted silver screw hlding a flap of metal - this is a cover over the end of another shaft that needs oil--one on the back as well. loosten- move flap- oil and replace flap
