Question
QUESTION: I have a weight driven Trend Grandfather Clock.  I pulled the weights up and now the only one dropping is the middle weight.  Is there a way that I can release the right and left weight? The chains are all the way to the top.  I am wondering if this is the problem.  I have done the same thing for over 30 years, but this time, they won't come down.

ANSWER: It sounds like the center chain is pulled up tight against its cog wheel.  I would suggest you have this condition relieved by a qualified repair person.  If you can't do that, describe very clearly the position of the weight.  Is there room enough for you to remove the weight from its chain?  This is critical!  (don't attempt to do this until I describe things you can do.)  Regards WJP

QUESTION: the center chain is the only chain that is moving, it keeps the time.  The two outside chains are pulled up to the top.  I can however, take the weights off, of the two outside chains that are not moving.  Thanks so very much for your help. It is so great appreciated.  Tammy

Answer
The most obvious suspect is that the chime train is in its locked position.  Check your silencing lever to be sure it is in the on position. Another suspect is the weights might be hung on the wrong chain.  As you face the clock, the heaviest weight should be on your right, the next heavy in the center and the lightest on the left.  If neither of these is the culprit your clock most likely is in need of a good cleaning.
