Clocks, Watches - number of strikes do not match the real time

Expert: Harold Williamson - 11/3/2009

Question
Hi,

I own a Sessions/Sanford 8 day mantel clock. It worked fine until I neglected to rewind it on the 7th day and the clock stopped. I waited for the "real" time (so that I didn't have to move the "hands") and rewound it again. now the number of strikes on any given hour is one strike less that the real hour that it shows. (2 o'clock: 1 chime, 5 o'clock: 4 chimes etc).

I searched online and followed some of the advise given to solve this type of a problem but without any results.

Now I am even more confused. Some advisers say to never move the minute hand, some say to move only the minute hand. Others say to move only the hour hand etc.

Now I hesitate to try anything and decided to ask the experts.

Can you please advise me how to fix my problem with the "missing"  chime (Bim Bam) so that the number of strikes will match the hour?

Also please explain how to set the time the right way. What are the rules about moving each hand of the clock and to what direction?  This will be very helpful and will clear my confusion.

I am eagerly waiting for your answer and thanking you in advance.

miki.

Answer
Hello Miki,

The hour hand is friction fitted onto a brass shaft.  You can simply move the hour hand to the hour the clock just struck.  Hold the hour hand at about midpoint so not to bend the tip.  Then reset the clock or wait till time catches up to the time showing then restart. you will feel resistance but it will move.

If your Sessions 8 day is stopping at 7 days it is a sign of wear as most 8 day clocks will easily run 8 or 9 days

Normally you never need to move the hour hand as it just follows the minute hand around.  Moving the min. hand clockwise is correct way and stopping at each striking point and allowing the sequence to complete.
Hope this helps.
