Question My wall clock stopped working. It is fully windup but the pendulum will not continue after I start it and will not tick.
Can you advise me how to fix this problem and also can you tell me anything about this clock. I know that it was made in Japan by Owaritokei but nothing else. I searched the internet but did not find any information.
Thank you.
Miki
Answer Hello Miki,
If my guess is right you have a 31 day clock and if it is 5 years old or older it is in need of service. The mainsprings are very powerful in these clocks so as to make them run for a month but at the same time the extra power makes them wear about 3 times the rate of a normal 8 day clock.
try moving the min. hand past a striking point and listen to hear if the ticking resumes as you are moving the hand but stops when you let go That is a sure sign that power is being lost due to wear.
If it continues to tick till about 3 to 5 min before the next strike and stops that to is a sign of wear.
Also try moving the bottom of the clock ever so slightly at a time to the left and see if the ticking resumes. Listen to the tick as it changes beat and after you have gone as much as 1/2 inch and nothing happens try going to the right slowly and see if you start hearing an even tick tock .
Knowing these clocks like I do I think you will need service by a clocksmith. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.
Harold
