Clocks, Watches/Ansonia Desk Clock

Question
Hello, I have an old Ansonia desk clock that keeps stopping when I wind it. If I shake it it starts to run but then will stop after varying lengths of time. I did notice that the second hand that appears by itself at the bottom of the face seems to stop in the same place most of the time. I'm wondering if the spring is too tight and if so if it is something I can fix myself. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Mike,

The mainspring cannot be too tight; "overwinding" is probably the most common myth in clockmaking. The mainspring is simply fully wound and the clock is not running, so it does not unwind. The second hand also probably does not give any clues as to the problem, unless it is catching on one of the hands or touching the dial.

Your clock shows every sign of worn bearings, and probably needs an overhaul. A clockmaker can disassemble the clock, replace worn bearings with bushings, and do other miscellaneous repairs. Because it is a balance wheel type clock, when you shake it you get the balance wheel spinning and this imparts enough extra power to the movement to get it running for a little while, until the cumulative friction of the worn bearings again brings it to a stop.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
