Clocks, Watches/Howard Miller No Hour gongs

Question
i have a floor style, 3 weight, cable type Howard Miller grandfather.  It keeps good time, and chimes appropriately on each quarter hour.  It does not gong at all on the hour

Answer
When the clock nears completion of the full melody and the half hour chime you should hear an audible click which is the cocking of the strike train.  My first instinct is that this cocking maneuver is not occurring.  This is most likely due to dirt, cleaning will be required to correct.  Another less likely cause is the weight are not hung in the right position.  As you face the clock the heaviest weight should be on your right, the lightest weight in the center and the remaining weight on your left.  The preponderance of likely hood is it needs cleaning.  Regards WJP
