Clocks, Watches/Removal of hands - grandfather clock

Question
We have a Ridgeway grandfather/grandmother clock, circa 1970.  We are going to try to replace the movement ourselves.  How do you remove the hands from the face of the clock?  Does it require a special tool?  Does the nut turn counter-clockwise to unscrew it?

Answer
The nut holding the minute hand on turns counter-clockwise for removal. You may need to use a pair of pliers on it but there are no special tools required. I usually hold the nut with needle nose pliers and push the minute hand forward until the nut loosens up enough to unscrew it with my fingers.
The hour hand should pull off.
