Question
QUESTION: I have a Wadsworth Pilot 919206 -guaranteed 20 years
Elgin Nat'l Watch Co,21 jewels,No349,13255506
My grandfather used this pocket watch for his work on the Ontario & Western RR from about 1905 to 1955, it doesn't work.I don't know what is wrong or if it is worth repairing. Thanks in advance, John

ANSWER: John,

I would suggest that you write down the history of your grandfather. Where he was born, lived, died. Also, his wife and children, and anything else you can think of. Keep it with the watch. It will add to the sentimental value when you pass it down to the next generation.

if we assume that the watch only needs to be cleaned, oil, and time for accuracy, it would cost between $100 and $200. Depending on where you live, it might be closer to the low end.

If the watch is broken and you need to start to buy parts, that is where it gets to be really expensive. The most likely damage would be to the balance. To replace the balance would add an additional hundred dollars at least.  It could conceivably get up to $300-$400.

I cannot give you an accurate cost because neither of us knows what is wrong.  take it to a local watchmaker and ask them to inspect the watch and give you a quote for fixing it. The watchmaker may charge you $25-$50 for the quote, at least you'll know what it will cost you to get it fixed before a significant cash outlay. Most watchmakers will credit the cost for the quote if you decide to get the watch fixed with them.

Kind regards,

Melvin

QUESTION: Thanks Melvin,

Do you know how I could obtain an approx val for it in working condition? Any online sources? Thanks in advance.John

Answer
John,

Your best bet is to look in the "watch bible", which is "The Complete Price Guide to Watches", by Cooksey Shugart.

Remember that condition is a big part of value.  A watch that has been used for 50 years is not in mint condition.  There is no term "mint for it's age".  I am not suggesting that you would do this on purpose.  Many people are overwhelmed by the sentimental value and that takes away one's ability to be objective.

When in doubt, use the most conservative (lowest) value.

Kind regards,

Melvin
