Clocks, Watches/care of clock

Question
I have a wall clock that my dad purchased years ago he was told that it was from Germany. On the face of the clock at the top it has Robilla and at the bottom it has saissons. I have search the internet and can find nothing on it. It has Westminister chimes every 15 mins. and strikes on the hour. I would like to know if there are any good books on how to maintain and care for this clock. We have had the clock for about 50 years and it needs some care. I would like to see if I can do the work myself. Would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks Diana

Answer
Hello Diana,

Not knowing the maint. history of your clock I must tell you that these German made Westminster movements are very complicated and to clean them they must be totally taken apart and cleaned.  The oil used needs to be professionaly applied to only the parts that require oil and nowhere else.  If there is pivot or bushing wear that would need to be addressed or no amount of cleaning will help.  Please don't let anyone spray a lube on the clock.

I am very glad that you have your Dads clock but make sure you find a qualified clocksmith to maintain you prize.

Sorry I was of no help but good luck with your clock.
Harold
