Clocks, Watches/No chime

Question
We have a Waltham wall 31 day chime clock.  Every now and then the chime stops and doesn't start again even if we wind it.  It seems if we leave it off for a while (a few weeks) then we can wind it again and the chime works again.  Do you know what causes the chimes to stop?

Answer
The conditions you describe are manifested by accumulated atmospheric derby combining with the lubricants in your clocks movement.  This buildup results in a compound that ultimately causes very serious wear and damage.  I believe the symptoms you discus are an early warning to have the clock cleaned, lubricated and adjusted.  Ignoring these symptoms could lead to a more serious, and more costly condition if not attended to.  Regards WJP
