Clocks, Watches/Balance adjustment

Question
I just bought an used Linden mantle clock that is running very fast - about 4 minutes per hour! -. This has a helical coil spring, which is cylindrical shaped and about one inch long, and the instructions says the way for adjusting the clock for correct timekeeping (moving the three pronged regulation lever on the balance wheel). I have moved this part to the maximum, but the problem continues because it's not enough. How can I do for adjusting the clock? Many thanks. CESAR

Answer
Hi Cesar,

This is an extreme rate gain, and is beyond the limits of regulation of the regulating unit. The gain is being caused by something else.

Floating balance movements are extremely complicated to adjust, and a full explanation would be far beyond the scope of this forum. In general, an incorrectly set up escapement of this type can allow several escape wheel teeth to slip by at a time, rather than the even release of one tooth after another that is needed. Another possible problem is that in an old, worn or dirty movement, the balance wheel rotation can be inadequate, and teeth slip through too quickly. These are just a couple examples, and there are many more possible errors. These movements should be serviced by an experienced clock repair professional.   http://www.clockmasteronline.com
