Question

Clock Instructions
I am in need of a sheet of directions for a battery Elgin Anniversay clock. My clock has stopped chiming and it needed a new battery - I slide the battery out of the right bottom side - and I think the positive side went in first but can't remember.  I have a partial torn instruction sheet and can read only parts of it (how important it is that it is a fresh Alkaline type "D" 1st) How do I acquire a good instruction sheet - will need it to set time.

It is about 40 years old Elgin Glass Dome Anniversay Clock which I purchased for my parents when I was young and now have inherited it.  Other than personally is it worth trying to pursue this issue.

Answer
On most battery operated clocks the negative side of the battery would normally be placed against the 'spring' end of the battery compartment.
If you make a mistake, then don't worry it is very unlikely to damage your clock as the voltage is only 1.5v.
If the clock still doesn't work, then you may have to take it along to your local watch repair for a check up.
I hope this has been of some help.
