Question
Please could you tell me how to remove the movement from the case? I can see where and it's connected, but do I need a special tool or is there just a special technique I need to use to get it out?

Kind Regards,

Maurice.

Answer
Hi Maurice,

Movements are mounted in many different ways, and without knowing what type of Garrard clock you have, or having a photo of the movement mounting, I can only give you some general guidelines.

First, you must remove the hands. It's best to set the clock to 12:00 before you do this, to simply reinstalling the hands in the correct positions.

Garrard made mostly small mantle clocks, so I assume that we dealing with that type of clock for explanatory purposes. When you look inside the back of the clock, you should see mounting brackets at each corner of the movement or along its vertical sides. The mounting brackets attach to the inside surface of the front of the clock.

There are two ways the brackets may be mounted. Either they have 1 to 3 holes in each bracket, and wood screws pass through these holes and simply screw the brackets to the inside front of the clock. Or, the second possibility, there are screws, usually pointed, which are mounted in the inside front of the clock. The brackets on the movement go through these screws, and are then held tight by hex nuts.

You shouldn't need any special tools for this other than possibly a long screwdriver, or a screw-holding screwdriver for use in reinstalling the movement. If there is some unique issue in this process which I have not covered, please send me a followup at Allexperts.com with closeup photos of the parts in question.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
