Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I recently acquired a Seth Thomas clock made in 1880.  It keeps time very well and it chimes on the half hour, but for some reason it doesn't chime on the hour.  Any idea why?

    Thanks,
    Mike

ANSWER: first choice is that the left spring is not wound up. It does not necessarily wind the same direction as the right side.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for the reply.  I will try what you suggested.  There are two large holes by the 4 and 8 and one smaller one above the 12.  Do all three areas need to be wound up?  Also, how often should I wind the clock?  Is there any other maintenance neede?  I am a novice, so I really appreciate the help.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Answer
the clock would have originally come with a double-ended key - the small end is used at #12 if needed to adjust the running speed fast or slow "f" or 'S'- turning it slightly the direction of your wishes.

the big end is used to wind the clock fully once a week or more often if you need to due to inability to fully wind it.

no other maintenance.
