Question
I have a Linden mantel clock. The clock works but losses about 5 minutes a day on the time. I noticed when I open the back door there is a - and + signs on each side of the movement which makes me belive I can speed up or slow the time. But I don't know what to change to adjust daily time.

Thank you ..................Frank

Answer
On a daily basis you would set the clock by moving the minute hand forward.  If your clock is of the chiming and/or striking variety always stop the turning of the minute hand until it has completed its chime/strike, then proceed.  Actually you should not have to set your clock on a daily routine.  If the clock gets so far off in one day that it requires setting, it is in need of adjustment and possibly cleaning.  If it is adjustment only, that is needed you will need to adjust the escapement.  In your instance that would mean the component that has the - + designation upon it.  If it is a standard balance wheel escapement you will be a lever visible that in your case you would move towards the +.  If however your clock has what is termed a floating, there is a totally different task to perform.  This would require a whole set of instructions.  Let me know if that be the case.  Regards WJP
