The clock referred to is probably not as old as 1840.  This mantle clock is likely a product of the Canadian Forestville Clock Company, founded in 1941. The Toronto company was very successful and marketed clocks with imported movements from England, Germany and France. It closed in 1981. (more info, see http://www.canclockmuseum.ca/Canadian_Makers/Blackforest_Clock_Company_and_Fores.)

Not all Forestville clocks were American.
