Clocks, Watches/Grandfather Clock cables are unwound

Question
My daughter has a 90 year old G. F. clock, overhauled 2 years ago. To lessen the weight of the clock in order to move it within her house the three weights were allowed to run down and then were removed. This caused the three pairs of cables to unwind from the bare "winding spools?" at the top where the weights are suspended from. The cables are not in the grooves. Will you please offer guidance about rewinding the cables? Tips to follow? Can a total novice do this? Thank you, R. Miller

Answer
you never want to wind a cable driven clock without the weights hanging on the cables FIRST! If the cables are still un-wound, there should be very little cable in the grooves anyway- what's the issue here???

If you have already wound it without the weights on then you probably have what looks like a bait-casting fishing reel "backlash"- call a pro.
