I have a wall clock that has to be hand wound. The chime sound is really bad, how can I change the sound of the chime? Could the hammer be bad or bent? Would/Could I change out the chime or hammer?
Answer the striking sound in clocks are as individual as pianos or violins
BUT to sound the best the hammer head may have had a leather insert in the tip which is now missing, be resting too close to the gong or whatever it hits, the gong may be loose or resting on the case or some other part so it vibrates badly. after checking all the above - some do sound better than others and sometimes I wrap a bit of black plastic electrical tape around the spot where the hammer head hits to soften the sound. more tape= softer sound.
