Clocks, Watches - e ingram & co

Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 3/15/2009

Question
Thank's for your time. I have a clock that appears to be stamped with e.ingram & co,Pat D oct 8 78 Nov 11 79, could this be right, and what does it mean? The second line is hard to read. I think it may be of the Venetian figure 8 shelf clock. Again, thank you in advance.

Answer
it is spelled Ingraham--- yes it is right and it means the company had been granted a US patent on those dates for some mechanical design in the mechanism itself. So the clock was made sometime after 11/11/1879.  The front legs of the mechanism itself have a month and year on them if you want to get into the clock to look.
they were "E. Ingraham & Co." 1861-1880  and called "The E. Ingraham & Co"  1880-1884
