Clocks, Watches/vintage watches

QuestionI have 2 vintage watches. the first one is a helbros womens watch, square two toned face, probably 1920-30's. Georgous engraved case with diamonds and sapphires. the movement is 17 jeweled swiss. It runs but does not keep time. I would love to have it repaired so I could wear it but have been told that it is not worth fixing. Is it worth repair?
also, I have a Hamilton ladies watch. The style looks like the vailant one from 1959-1960 but has 4 diamonds on the top of the case and bows with diamonds on the band. do you know if they made Valiants like this and if so, when?
thank you!
AnswerMs. Karen,
You are the only one who should make the determination as to whether the watch is worth fixing or not.
It is arrogant for a watchmaker to tell you that it is or is not worth fixing.
If you love the watch, the financially consideration is only part of the story. I have fixed many watches for people that told me that it had great sentimental value and they wanted it fixed, even if it was 100% of the cost of the watch.
If you are close to the store that told you that the watch is not worth fixing, go back to them and ask for a quote. Get a quote, not an estimate. The former is fixed and the later is only a guess. Then you determine whether or not it is worth it to you. My guess is that the cost will be around $100 to $150, depending on where you live.
Kind regards,
Melvin
