Question
I have a few Slate Mantel clocks and now I have retired its time to try my hand at restoration. The main problem is restoring the slate itself as most of them are dirty and dull. Any advise will be much appreciated. Regards, Leonard.

Answer
Most communities have a monument works.  Usually producing headstones.  These folks can tell you a lot about cleaning and maintaining slate, marble, granite etc.  I suggest you contact that local source.  During the years of maintaining a working shop I have
enjoyed the advice of our local monument works.  I can recall more than one occasion where I was in deep doodoo and they bailed me out.  Regards WJP
