Question
Hello Kenneth. i have come accross your question page on clocks and wonder if you are able to help me. Back in the 60s i servered an apprentership in the clock/watch trade and have kept me hand in doing various jobs more as a hobby now. When serving my time a verge clock came into the work shop for repaire allthough i was not allowed to touch it it was a fasanating clock to look at. Just recently i was given one and to my delight have looked to see more details about them.  Finding they are rare are you able to tell me where i am likley to get a pendulum for it as it does not have one. Also i have some weights from an old grandfather clock but am not sure if these will do of if i need special weights of a cetain weight. Also if in very good condition  after resteration do they sell very well. Please forgive spelling mistakes.  Kind Regards Paul Taylor

Answer
actually called Morbier or Comptoise clocks and the one in your photo has a crown wheel escapement instead of the more modern escapement- but both have "verges" or the shaft that has two pallets on it that allow the teeth on the escapement to rotate one tooth at a time tied into the pendulum.Your photo looks like it has two hammers under the bell one would be for the hour and half hour strike and I suspect the other is part of an alarm for the alarm mechanism??

pendulum above I understand was for the crown wheel clocks and the escape wheel clocks had very large decorative thin brass covered pendulums (Merritts used to carry them but no longer show them on-line(P247) you will have to call and ask if you want one, to see- do not know who else might have them)

official weights:  http://www.merritts.com/store4/public/product.aspx?ProductID=82350&SearchText=P-...

any weight that works will do for testing about 8+ lbs.
