Question
Is there any way to turn the chimes off for certain time periods, like sleep
time and then back on during waking hours?

Answer
maybe- some units have levers in dial slot by the number 3 or 9

some have strings with rings on the ends that hang down either side up under the dial when you open the front door and pulling down on them and hooking the rings on the nail on the side wall leaves the chime hammers pulled away from the chime rods.

you can remove the right hand weight if all else fails.
