Clocks, Watches/Sangamor Special repair

Question
Hello. I just picked up the works and case for a Sangamor Special 23 jewel pocket watch with what I believe has the harder to find 14 K gold filled case with the x x x around the rim.  I am no expert on watches but but I am a railroad buff and always wanted a decent RR watch.  The movement appears to be working well.  The problem is that there is no face, dial, or crystal.  Another issue is the rear "bow?" does not seem to fasten to the case.  The inner one which is marked Sangamore Special and the front close tight.  It appears that someone might have tried to pop the back by the hinge.  It is a little out of line.  All said and done, I believe that this might be a decent watch and was wondering if the problems mentioned can be corrected.  Can an original dial, face, crystal be found  or are there copies made?  Is the watch worth restoration? I'm not quite sure where to begin.  I would appreciate any advice.  Thanks.  Dave

Answer
David,

If this watch is in a hunter's case, it is not a RR watch.  It can still be a great watch though.

All the case problems can be corrected.  You may not be able to find the original dial and crystal but most definitely you can find ones that will fit that watch and look appropriate.

Is it worth restoring?  That is a tough question.  It is more a personal question than one that someone else can answer for you.

As a guideline, the case will cost between 50-100 dollars.  The dial is probably another 50-100 and the crystal maybe 30.  So, you will be into it for about 250 and then you will want is serviced, which will likely be 150-200.  So, all in all 400-500.  When complete, it might be worth close to that.

You won't make any money on it but you can have a nice watch when you are finished.

Kind regards,

Melvin
