Question
I havr a Howard Miller Grandfathers clock that is about 20 years old. Lately, it will stop for no apparent reason but only on the hour. two, three or seven o'clock. it is fully wound, but it comes to a stop. What is wrong?

Answer
The chime lifters have to lift to a higher point on the hour than on the quarters. The cam that lifts them is on the minute hand shaft. Therefore as the minute hand approaches the top of every hour it lifts to its highest point.
There are two possibilities: Either the clock is not running as well as it should due to lack of oil or the normal wear that a 20 year old clock will have or the lifters need adjusting because they are lifting higher than need be.
