Clocks, Watches/Herman Miller Grandfather Clock stops after a few hours

Question
I've inherited my dad's Herman Miller grandfather clock (35 years or so old). A little over a year ago we had $300 worth of service since it wasn't working. It worked for a year, although we could never quite get it to keep accurate time (5-8 minutes off per day). Now, it will only run for 2-4 hours before stopping. Upon visual inspection everything looks fine. My wife was the one who tried to keep it in time and I'm wondering if she misadjusted the tension so much that this is happening or if there might be other things I can troubleshoot?

Thanks, Ron

Answer
The clock is undoubtedly working against considerable friction.  I suspect it is due to one or more defective pinion.  I seriously doubt that any of your wife's efforts contributed to the current deficiencies.  I hate to tell you this, I believe your clock is in dire need of servicing.  If you have this done, insist that the clock repair person install the clock in your home and to properly adjust the clock before you accept the job.  I might be able to provide you with a better and more cost effective solution.  To do so I would need you to send me ALL the information that is stamped upon the clock movements, brass, backplate.  Regards WJP
