Question

Ansonia Norton 8day Cl
This clock has like others you've been told about has the label on back cabinet about the Paris Exposition 1878. What does this mean? It's a Norton 8day Strike made in NY on the cabinet is etched by the maker June(?) 9,1915 the name G.T. Langhlin.  Does this sound right?  The machanical part has the patented mark of June 18,1882 stamped on it. all in good shape. What was the original price? My Dad wrote 1944 on the back in pencil & his street address when he got the clock.
I looked on line at 1,759 plus clocks, couldn't find one like it...really how do I? Thanks

Answer
The label means that the manufacturer displayed clocks at the Paris Exposition in 1878. At the time, this is the way manufacturers spread the word about their goods. It was not just clocks, piano makers and other factories did the same thing. They used the label as a sort of prestige.
I don't know the original price. There is a book by Tran Du Ly on Ansonia clocks. He published original ads inside the book that tell the selling price and date of publication. You would have to find someone who owns the book to get that information.
Here is a link to a clock like yours: http://mmaac.com/Clocks/ClockDetail.asp?Manufacturer_Id=32&Clock_Id=25

You may be able to contact the owner of this clock for more info.
