Question
I have one or the other listed above It was purchased in 1983 and has not worked for some time.  A estimate on the phone for repair was 500 to 700 dollars.  I only paid about 800 for it.  So any idea as to the estimate.  All parts are there except for one small screw.  The repair company talked about worn and stressed gear teeth which could require repair.  Also mentioned that the clock could now be worth up to $3000.00

Answer
Hi Tom,

I can't give you any information on the amount of the estimate, as prices vary very widely by region and by individual clock repairer. I would point out that a price given on the phone is not really an estimate; I call it a "guesstimate". Any repair person is forced to assume the worst when he has not even seen the clock, and must give the highest possible estimate, under the assumption that the clock is in worst possible condition. If he gives a lower or "standard" estimate, then finds many serious additional problems when he has the clock in his hands, he will be forced to greatly increase the estimate, and possibly make the customer think that his original estimate was a "bait" price, and now he is getting the "switch".

It is absolutely true that the repair cost on an older clock such as yours can be close to the original purchase price, simply due to the price increases that we see on everything over such a period of time.

"Worn and stressed gear teeth" are rarely a problem. It is the pivots (tips of the gear teeth that turn in the bearing holes) and the bearing holes that wear out. The repair of these conditions is extremely labor intensive, and therefore, repair costs can be high. It is possible that you may be able to have the movement replaced with a new one for about the same price as an overhaul. This is a preferable repair, if the movement is still available.

In summary, I would recommend that you have a local professional clock repairer actually examine your clock and give you an informed estimate of the possible repair cost.
