Question
My Howard Miller (Hermle) 340-020 clock gains about ten
minutes every hour with the adjustment screw turned
clockwise to the maximum slow setting. Is there a way to
change the position of the spring itself to slow the
movement speed to a more nominal setting? Do you have any
other recommendation(s) that I might use to slow it down?

Answer
In my opinion your floating balance is in serious trouble and needs attention from a qualified clock repair person.  If you wish to learn the workings of the floating balance I refer you to the following WWW site. <home.earthlink.net/~atmosman/earthftp.html> this will take you to an index, seek out and click on, Hermle floating balance.  Regards WJP
