Clocks, Watches/Schatz ship clock chimes

Question
I am aware of the sequence of the 8 bell chimes of a ship's clock but so far have been unable to synchronize the correct chime with the half hour times. The method I use for pendulum chiming clocks of rewinding the hands to agree with the chime doesn't seem to work with the Schatz.  What is the correct method?  Thank you.

Answer
Once these clocks are set up and functioning properly they are very reliable.  I suspect your clock is a victim of human intervention.  If you be sufficiently skilled I would suggest you remove the hands and dial so that you can closely observe the action of the various cams and levers that control the strike.  I suspect there might be a bent pin involved.  The only way to determine this is through careful observation.  If you are not skilled in this area I urge you take the clock to a qualified clock repair person.  If you do so, make very sure the person entrusted with this very fine instrument is indeed qualified to do the work.  Look for certification and membership in professional horological societies etc.  Wish I was on hand to help you.  Regards WJP
