Question
hi, how do i get the balance movement to keep good time in a smiths mantel clock, i have replaced movement with one from another smiths clock i have, but it just keeps gaining.clock chimes ok but i cant regulate it. there is an s on the brass one side and an f on the other side and a lever with a red arrow at each end on the suspension wheel which i have turned fully both ways but it still keeps galloping on,cheers p.martin.

Answer
It could be that the clock is not running very well. The balance should make a full 360 degree rotation from one extreme to the other.
If the balance is getting close to a full swing there are two ways to slow it down: Lengthen the hairspring. This is done by removing the pin holding the hairspring at its end. If you do this you must put it it beat. This is a repair that should be done by an experience professional as you could cause complications by not performing the tack correctly.
The other option is to add weight to the balance. This should be done equally on both sides of the balance wheel.
I hope this information is helpful to you.
