Question
I have an old clock and wind it about every 3 days.  However, one day after winding it, the clock stopped and I am unable to move the minute hand, it seems to be stuck.
I do not think I over wound it as I am always very careful and it had been going for one day before it stopped.  I am frightened of forcing the minute hand in case I break it.
The clock is probably about 60/70 years old. Garrard Clocks Ltd and Johnston & Court are the names on the face of the clock.  I would much appreciate your help  Thanks

Answer
Hi Sheila,

First, the clock should be wound all the way, as far as the keys will go, usually once a week. "Overwinding" is not a problem; underwinding is. Also, do not force the minute hand, as that may very well break it.

The minute hand is most likely jammed by the chime mechanism. If this is the case, it is probably in a position just a few minutes before one of the four strike points (quarters). Try gently moving the minute hand BACKWARDS a few minutes. This often frees the jam, and the clock will start ticking again. If the problem reoccurs, then something is repeatedly causing this jam, usually need for lubrication or worn bearings in the movement.

If the hand is jammed in both directions, you should not attempt any more repairs, and take it to a professional clock repairer for service.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
