Question
Hi,
I saw this beautifull clock at a flea market, and I tried to get some info about it.There were no manufacturers name inside that I could see.
First, there were six chains on the inside, and the only i.d. on the back, that I could make out were; JW-32/1,
as well as B122/27.
As the shop selling this clock want $1600 for it, (belonged to an old lady), I 'd like to know more about it.
Could you help me identify what those numbers mean?
In the meantime, I'll try to get more info tomorrow from the shop.

Answer
Hi Denis,

First, you were probably seeing three chains, threaded over the sprocket wheels so that six chains ENDS were visible. The number you saw was probably actually "UW 32/1". This would indicate a very old Urgos movement, at least 30 years. The older Urgos movements lasted quite a long time, but on a 30 year old movement I would look very closely for wear in the bearings of the movement, which might require a replacement with a new movement (same make and model, so no loss in authenticity value), or your clock might stop, not run at all, chime slowly, or chime not at all. A new movement is quite expensive; prices vary widely by region, but I would be prepared for $400 or more for a professional clock repairer to do the job. I want to stress that this is only a POSSIBILITY, and may not be needed in your case. An examination by a professional clock repairer before buying would not be a bad idea. The Urgos "32" movement (the "/1" means the first version of this movement) is a standard-grade movement, without a lot of fancy features or extras. One characteristic of these older clocks is that the wood finishes are often of finer quality than in newer clocks, have nicer detail, and heavier lacquer resulting in a finer glossy sheen. I cannot comment on the price, as appraising is outside my field of expertise.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
