Clocks, Watches/Trend by Sligh - Part for hook on weight

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

My parents have a Grandfather clock that my Grand parents purchased back in 1979, everything works great, but recently one of the hooks on top of the center weight snapped off.

I am trying to find replacements hooks for all three weights as we were lucky they were low and did not break the glass or any other part in the clock.

Suggestions please? They live in central Minnesota, I in North Dakota.

Clock Part - Trend by sleigh - Style 845W-149 - Movement 10085 (or 100B5) - Pack # 088-99

Thanks for your time.
Dean

ANSWER: Dean, there are a few different styles of hooks, and most importantly, different threads.  You can look under weight and pulleys at the Timesavers Online catalog (www.timesavers.com)  or other suppliers.  They have different styles and threads, but you will have to know the thread on yours.  I probably have the correct hook, but I would have to have the original hook to match it.  Also some clocks had a combination of hooks and eyes to prevent hanging the weights in the incorrect position.  Are yours all hooks?  If so, contact me at my shop email address and if you like, I will give you instructions for sending the broken hook (both pieces if possible) or one of the other hooks to me so I can check it and give you the details.

QUESTION: John,

Thanks for the quick reply, it is very much appreciated.  I did go out and look at the site you suggested and found one that looks like the hook, BUT, if you look at this picture,

http://www.timesavers.com/catalogmain2.asp?ProductID=11679&submit1=Search

it looks like the opening is in the shape of a finger, the one we need has a circle type opening.  I will see if my parents can send the broken one to you. They might just need to send one that is not broken as the threads are what snapped off.  They did get a replacement one from a jeweler but it looks like the one in the picture and the weight hangs to the left.

Answer
I have a very limited number of the hooks with the male threaded screws.  It might be best to call Timesavers (other suppliers I use are Merritts Antiques and  R & M Imports which can be found by Googling them) and arrange to send your sample to them for replacement.  I'm not sure what you mean in that the weight hangs to the left.  Is it because it doesn't fit correctly?

Expertise

As much as I would like to offer values of clocks, I am not a certified appraiser and will not venture into giving an unresearched guess. There is very little published information on what I consider to be the value of "modern production clocks". Considerations are what the clock originally sold for, the condition of the case and movement, and particularly the area in which you live, the demand and the economy. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been a clockmaker for about 35 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience

One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.
