Clocks, Watches/Clocks being wound too tight?

Question
Hello!
I had a question about two clocks I have that do not currently work - presumably because they are wound too tight?  One is a Seth Thomas and one is a Hamburg American Clock Co clock - both mantel clocks.  The pendulums on them will not swing, and the previous owner tightened the spring to the point that they will wind no further.  Any thoughts on how to get the coil to start turning gears again?  It must be stuck or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Andrew

Answer
Your clock springs need cleaning.  The first step in that endevor requires the use of a let-down tool.  The tool is applied to allow the controled release of the power stored up by the fully wound spring.  This is a dangerous bit of work and should be done by a propessional clock repair person.  Regards  WJP
