Clocks, Watches/Westminster chime problem
Expert: Michael Radi - 9/15/2009
QuestionQUESTION: I have a Mustershutz wall clock which has a problem that when chiming each quarter it will keep running through the entire sequence of chimes before stopping. I have had a look at it appears that the 4 pins that trip each quarter strike are stopping the chiming sequence from stopping and the time has to elapse until the mechanism can drop down and stop the sequence. How do i adjust this? Hope the explanation is clear! Thanks Ben
ANSWER: There are several different set ups for controlling the chime and I don't know what one you have by the name Mustershutz. Can you send me a good photo of the front of the movement?
The four pins should lift a lever but the lever should drop down, out of the way, after each pin passes through it.
I'll be happy to help you but need that photo.

QUESTION: Please find attached the photo as requested, hope this helps with the question! If you need photos from different angles please let me know, Many thanks Ben
AnswerThanks for the really great photo. On the right side you see a cam with 4 low spots with a 4 high spots of varying size. When the clock chimes the first quarter the associated lever rides on the smallest of the high spots (4 note chime). The 1/2 hour chime is 8 notes and requires a longer high spot and so on.
Here is what to look for: After the clock chimes any quarter the lever should drop down into one of the low spots. When this happens the lever should catch a pin on the gear inside the slot at the upper right side.
Look at that gear and see if the pin is broken off or if the lever is just missing the pin when it comes by.
There is another lever off to the right to stop the chime after the hour. This one is working properly.
Let me know what you find.
