Clocks, Watches/Can you identify maker?
Expert: William J Perkins - 9/16/2009
QuestionI have a 'shelf' pendulum clock in moulded wood case measuring 8" wide by 10" tall by 4" deep. The clock box sits on a plinth 2" deep. There is a 5" x 5" glass window for the dial plus a reverse painted lower pane 5" x 2.5" with flower decorations.
There are no identifying marks on the dial which is a white 'enamelled' square face with Roman numerals. In each corner are line decorations in black.
Inside the case is a paper label decorated with clock, and in the centre are two sets of letters. The upper appear to be overlapping letter M T S(or &). The lower letters are GJ. Below these is printed TRADE MARK
On the reverse of the dial is written in pencil "This clock probably made by Chauncey JEROME at Newhaven, Conneticut, USA circa A.D. 1854 (By A.C. Macantyre {who repaired New Pinion and Wires to 2nd Wheel} dated 9 April 1954"
Is there any way to better identify maker and date?
Many thanks
Dick
AnswerThere are so many thing coming into play, in these situations, making it nigh on to impossible to make any judgements without an in hand examination of the clock. I would suggest you take the clock to an antiquarian, preferably one specializing in horology. Based upon what you have provided me, I would be inclined to look to Switzerland as a possible source. As a starter perhaps Graf-Jequier. Regards WJP
