Question
I have a cuckoo clock that is 45 years old.  It keeps perfect time, but the chain at makes the cuckoo cuckoo will not stay up.  As soon as I let the chain go when I pull it up the weight falls the full length of the chain.  The chains are good and I think in the proper slots.  Can you help me?  Thank you.  Rosanne

Answer
Sounds like the ratchet on the strike train 1st wheel has become disengaged.  I suspect this is a job you should refer to a clock repair person.  If you are the type who does this type of thing yourself, you will need to remove the movement from the case to make appropriate repairs.  Let me know if this is your inclination, and I will attempt to walk you through the process.  Regards WJP
