Question
I have a old (mid to late 18800s Granddaughter clock handed down thru my family. the timing is fine, the pendulum etc. works great! however, the chimes do not go off. at all. Is it possible to overwind the chimes? It has 3 holes for the keys to wind it, which one is the chimes? I amso have not yer found any marks to say what year it is or who made it?

Answer
In general we say that it is not possible to over-wind a clock and something else is causing your problem. Without seeing the clock I can't tell you why it won't chime, there are too many possibilities. The first thing I would do is lubricate the pivot holes. This is the simplest repair and a common trouble maker.
