Question
Question re serial number 87961. serial number on the movement inside the case.  Also written in the movement" The Ontario" Inside the exterior back cover are the numbers 386161 and the word Silveroid.  Inside the cover for the movement are the numbers 6171.  It is through this cover which access would be made for the key to wind the watch.  I did do alittle researc h and thought it might have made in Springfield, Mass in 1879.
Any further info would be appreciated as to where I might find a key.  Regards   Fred

Answer
Fred,

I am sorry for the delay.

Your watch was made in 1878.

I found that information in the "Complete Price Guide to Watches".

Silveroid is a metal alloy.  Silveroid consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was fairly hard wearing and could withstand the rigors of everyday use, for instance on the Railroads.

For pocket watch collectors, almost all the value of the watch is in the movement.

You will need to determine the diameter of the stem that the key will fit over.  When you get that, call Bill at Primrose Supply.
His number is 877 296 1025 or if a toll free number won't work from Canada, contact him at 801 485 3908.

I have already spoken with him and he has keys available.

Kind regards,

Melvin
