Clocks, Watches/replacing musical movement
Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 2/15/2010
QuestionGreetings,
My mother asked whether I might be able to repair a simple "Black Forest" style mechanical cuckoo (possibly made about 1955.)
Outside [rear] there's a paper label that says "Fledermaus"
Inside, the clock-movement is stamped with several phrases:
- G.M.ANGEM
- E.SCHMECKENBECHER
- MADE IN GERMANY
One of the [two] bellows is broken, which I'm guessing isn't a big deal, however, the musical movement is also damaged. The musical movement includes a brass gear mounted on the same shaft as the drum (the gear which drives the governor) and the gear has stripped teeth. I'm interested in acquiring an entire working musical movement (not necessarily Fledermaus.)
The people at ClockWorks.com kindly referred me to blackforestimports.com, but Blackforest's on-line selection of musical movements doesn't appear to include a suitable replacement though it's possible they have one that might work.
Features required are:
- a shut-off arm
- screw/hole beside drum for mounting the "little man" mechanism.
I have some pictures - poor as they are - but see no option to include them here.
Can you recommend a source for new or used musical movements? Although this clock doesn't seem to be very valuable or of particularly good quality, it would be nice to put it right, and I have time to spare!
Any help/ideas are appreciated,
Cheers!
