Question

L.F Moreau
Hello! Greetings from South West Michigan. I am looking for some information/help on a clock that I have. I purchased this at an auction a few years.

The clock is a bronze/brass clock. The words - L.F Moreau and France are cast right on it. The base is a marble base.

The dial says Silvin and Paris on it. The picture shows the clock - and I took the dial out of it at the time of taking the pictures. The mechanism has the numbers 52092 stamped on it. Also the Letters J S appear on the back of the mechanism.

The mechanism is now working fine and works perfect. I was wondering if you could shed some light on the maker and the time period that this clock belongs to. Also, what might be the value of something like this!

Look forward to your reply!

Cheers
Sunny

Answer
Sunny, your clock is a product of the L and F Moreau brothers around the turn of the century.  The material of the sculpture is known as bronzed spelter.  I have found a resource for the Moreau brothers.  If you will Google "L and F Moreau eBay Guides", it will give you a brief but good description of them.  I do not give values of clocks on the Internet, but I did look up the Moreau clocks on the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide Website that I subscribe to, the clocks in the same class and type as yours in original condition and configuration are listed from $750 and up.  If you are into collecting antique clocks, this is a very good resource.  I hope this helps a little.

Expertise

As much as I would like to offer values of clocks, I am not a certified appraiser and will not venture into giving an unresearched guess. There is very little published information on what I consider to be the value of "modern production clocks". Considerations are what the clock originally sold for, the condition of the case and movement, and particularly the area in which you live, the demand and the economy. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been a clockmaker for about 35 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience

One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.
