Question
QUESTION: I am trying to locate a Jauch PL 34 cm movement, under the words "Western Germany" are these two numbers 4 71. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks Dennis

ANSWER: Dennis, I have an NOS Jauch movement at my shop, but I am not sure what the pendulum length is.  I will be out of state until the middle of next week.  I will get back to you when I return to my shop.  In the meantime I suggest you check some of the on-line auctions and enter a combination of items such as Jauch pl 34 or Jauch pl34.  In the meantime I will also inquire on my Internet Clocksmiths Group and see if anyone has one of these movements.

QUESTION: John, The pendulum length is 5" (12" from hook to tip).  The distance between the winding stem and the hand stem is 1 1/8" from center to center. I appreciate any help you can offer. I built this School House Clock in '72 (I was 14)it was on my parents wall ever since. Now it's mine and I'd like to keep it going.

Answer
Dennis, I have found a Jauch PL34, but I'm not sure of a completer match.  Will you contact me at my shop email address below so we can discuss the details.  This one has Westminster with side hammers on it.  It would help if you could send me a photo of the original movement if you have it.  If you do have it, why would you not have it restored?

Expertise

As much as I would like to offer values of clocks, I am not a certified appraiser and will not venture into giving an unresearched guess. There is very little published information on what I consider to be the value of "modern production clocks". Considerations are what the clock originally sold for, the condition of the case and movement, and particularly the area in which you live, the demand and the economy. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been a clockmaker for about 35 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience

One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.
