Question
I would like to have my grandfather's pocket watch repaired. It is a Ingraham Autocrat model-not sure what year.  I realize it is not worth much, but I'd like to honor him by having it working again and using it as a family keepsake.  What are my best options for such a repair? I live near Cleveland Ohio

Answer
Brian,

This is a nice thing you are doing to honor your grandfather.  Too often in our society we see a throw away mentality and as a result we don't value quality workmanship like our ancestors did.

I don't know of any watchmakers in Cleveland but I bet there is at least one.  Check around for a local person.  Stop by his/her shop and ask lots of questions.  First, ask him if he can give you an estimate.  If it needs more than a cleaning, the parts will run up the bill.  You want to know what you are in for before the work begins.  Most watchmakers will tell you before they start the work.  Avoid shops that tell you that they cannot do that.

Be prepared to wait.  A modern watch can be done in weeks.  Depending on the parts needed, antique watches can take much longer.

If there is anything that you want to know, send another question.  I will be glad to help you through the process.

Kind regards,

Melvin
