Clocks, Watches/Mantel Clock
Expert: Michael Radi - 6/8/2010
QuestionQUESTION: Clock was purchased in 1996. The left side cable will not hold tension after winding thus creating a situation where the weight could fall. Is this a problem that I can address myself or should I let a professional fix it.
Thanks in advance for your response,
Bob
ANSWER: Hi Bob,
There is a click spring and click on the cable barrel. The spring probably broke. Access to this is very difficult and it should be done by a professional.

QUESTION: Thank You, Michael You've ben most helpful. I will take the clock to my clock repair guru. Another? I have an old mantel clock that does keep time but no longer chimes because the barrel that controls the chimes no longer functions. My clock repair person said that he cannot locate a barrel for this clock. Can you give me any advice on how I may be able to locate an appropriate barrel by myself. The clock is presently in the shop; therefore, I cannot provide you with the nomenclature on it. It has a vibrant sound and my wife and myself miss it.
Again, Thanks in advance.
Bob
ANSWER: I would like to know any markings on the back of the clock movement. If you can give me those I'll let you know if I can find a barrel for you.

QUESTION: Hello Again Michael,
The only info on the clock is "Made in Germany for John Wanamaker" and "PL12 cm". The clock was probably made in the 1930s.
Thanks Again,
Bob
AnswerYour repair person is right. Parts are not made for this clock anymore. If it is a mainspring problem we should be able to get one that's close enough. If the barrel is damaged the only way to get one is to pull it from another movement of the same manufacturer and model.
